Target Audience:

The target audience for this live 3.0-Hour certified conference is neurologists, physiatrists, pain specialists, resident physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists and other allied health practitioners interested in learning more about botulinum toxin therapy.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this activity, learners should be better able to:

  • Discuss the mechanism of action and the conceptual basis for therapeutic botulinum neurotoxin therapy in patients with limb dysfunction
  • Explain the anatomy of upper and lower limb muscles typically injected with botulinum toxin for the treatment of spasticity, dystonia, and pain
  • Review the current literature regarding the treatment of limb spasticity and pain in adults and children with botulinum toxin therapy
  • Evaluate commercial preparations and application of botulinum neurotoxin in limb dysfunction
  • Review the safety, efficacy, and dosage of the approved BoNT therapies
  • Identify appropriate patients for botulinum neurotoxin therapy and determine appropriate injection-site-specific selection and dosing strategies
  • Demonstrate injection techniques in order to optimize therapeutic benefit and reduce complications from BoNT therapy
  • Discuss the importance of post-injection follow-up, multidisciplinary treatment plans, patient/career education, and strategies to improve patient quality of life and outcomes
  • Select the proper billing and coding for botulinum toxin injections
